Music communities
This strand of the Know Your Bristol project is centred on Bristol’s Black Afrikan Caribbean music heritage of the 70s and 80s with a particular focus on the music spaces of this era (everything from house parties to historic venues like the Bamboo club).
While the music culture of this era played a key role in the shape of contemporary popular music and the way in which we understand Bristol today, it is relatively absent from official archives and histories of the City.
Our aims for this project are as follows:
1) to bring people together who see the music and culture of this era as part of their musical/cultural heritage.
2) to promote Bristol music heritage, both through performance events and to encourage use of the Bristol Record Office to discover more about the musical past.
3) to promote the physical and digital archiving process, encouraging people to digitize flyers, footage and other items to the BRO;
4) to promote use of the Map Your Bristol web site so that information is archived for future use.
We want to promote and carnivalise the history of Bristol’s music venues through performances, workshops and film screenings in order to help map the heritage of a neglected musical history. Watch this space for announcements of forthcoming events that put these aims into practice.
