The Knowle West on the Move strand is putting together a week-long workshop event about Knowle West TV, the pioneering community television project started by Peter Lewis and Rediffusion Cable in the early 1970s. We’ve digitised the archive and the video files are back in Bristol, being cared for by Bristol Record Office. Knowle West Media Centre will be making the video accessible through its University of Local Knowledge website.

During the week of 11 May, Knowle West Media Centre is opening its doors to welcome people to come and explore the KWTV archives. Drop-in activities include:

• Join Katie Mack for a masterclass in film editing (Tues, 12 May, 4.30pm). Katie Mack is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Film and Television at the University of Bristol and was Assistant Editor on Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994). She will give the inside track on how stories are constructed in film. What’s a cut? A dissolve? A montage? How are space and time manipulated through the editing process to create narratives that move us to tears, keep us on the edge of our seats and have us rolling in the aisles?
• Panel discussion on community media past and present (Tues, 12 May, 6pm) with Peter Lewis (who started KWTV), contemporary community media expert, Shawn Sobers (UWE & Firstborn Creatives); and Julian Warren (Senior Archivist, Bristol Record Office)
• Screening of artist-in-residence, David Hopkinson‘s, new cut-up work using the KWTV archives (Thurs, 14 May, 6-8pm) and chance to participate in a live editing workshop;
• Viewing the KWTV archives screened in their entirety on the big screen at the Media Centre;
• Work with University of Bristol students who will be editing short sequences of KWTV footage for online viewing;
• Events for young people: Control, Alt, Delete (Mon, 11 May, 4pm), XLR music workshop (Tues, 12 May, 6-8pm, Training Room) and Creative Hub editing workshop (Weds, 13 May, 5-7pm Western Room);
• Take a seat on the living room sofa to watch KWTV and contribute your knowledge about the people and places seen in the footage;
• Work with the Know your Bristol on the Move team to locate places you see on KWTV and place them on Map your Bristol.

This is the final public event in the Knowle West on the Move strand. It follows 2 workshops on KWTV (March 2014 and November 2014) and participation in International Home Movie Day (18 October 2014).
