Video Blog 16: Watching KWTV

Knowle West TV was part of Bristol Channel, Peter Lewis’s pioneering community cable TV experiment from the early 1970s. It aimed to democratise media production and worked with Rediffusion, at the time the UK’s largest cable company, to launch the service on its Bristol network. Knowle West TV was developed to test a decentralised media model and some 40 hours of broadcast were produced and transmitted between 1973 and 1975.

The video archive of Knowle West TV has recently been digitised by the Know your Bristol on the Move project. We’re working with people in Knowle West to identify participants and locations to add to the archival information. The video is being archived by Bristol Record Office and Knowle West Media Centre will bring this material into the community via the University of Local Knowledge.

18 November 2014 was the first time that residents of Knowle West and the Know your Bristol project team saw this unique archive of community TV.
